Built by the Mon Calamari for the original purpose of being a luxury cruiser, the MC80a was transformed into a combat starship when the Mon Calamari saw the need to defend themselves and joined the Rebel Alliance. This was of great fortune to the Rebels, for they now were provided with large, powerful capital starships to serve in their previously pitiful fleet. In return, many Mon Calamarians received influential positions in the Rebel Alliance Navy and government.

The MC80a was the largest standard-production Mon Calamari combat spaceship, second only to the single customized cruiser named Home One, until the slightly larger MC90 was produced. The MC80a is one of the few starships that can challenge an Imperial Star Destroyer, though it will usually take more than one MC80a to defeat and ISD.

Each of these ships is a hand-crafted work of art, unique from all others. They appear to be organic in nature,Rounded pods and bulges that contain sensor arrays, weapons batteries, and shield generators give these star cruisers a disgustingly organic look, as if the ship is alive.

The MC80a Star Cruiser is well-protected. To protect the MC80 when it was transformed from a luxury vehicle to a battleship, the Mon Calamari covered the numerous viewports with hull components and heavy blast doors, to protect the ship's structural integrity. Further, the cruiser's systems are redundant, making the cruiser difficult to defeat, but expensive to maintain. They were designed with triply-redundant shielding, and most other systems had at least double redundancy.

These ships are 1200 meters in length, and carry a normal crew of 5,402, with the ability to transport 1,200 troops. It has been rated at 60 MGLT at sublight speeds. The MC80a has the following shipboard components: TriLuna 400 MGS Stardrive and Hyperdrive Motivator, 20 ArMek SW-7 Ion Cannon Batteries, Serridge SEAL Shielding System (rated at 240 SBD), 6 Front-mounted Phylon-Q7 Tractor Beam Projectors, 48 Taim and Bak XV9 Turbolaser Batteries, Plat Dromma Targeting Computer, 6 Fighter Bays (Y-wing Squadrons, 2 X-wing Squadrons, and 1 A-wing Squadron. Some argue that the MC80 carries only three starfighter squadrons, but that is false.
