Produced as an Escort Carrier, the Interceptor was built on the Interdictor and Enforcer framework, and looks exactly like these sister craft. Described as a "baby" Star Destroyer, the Interceptor performs largely the same function. Though designed primarily to be a starfighter carrier, the Interceptor is heavily armed, and capable of entering the fray along with its starfighters against an enemy fleet. The upsides to the prototype Interceptor was that it used the same parts as TIE/ln's, Interdictors, and Enforcers, and thus demanded only simple maintenance. Moreover, the crews of Interdictors and Enforcers were already prepared to crew the Interceptor, since it was comprised of the same components and systems.

The four gravity well projectors of the Interdictor have been hollowed out and connected with rectangular protrusions, which house the fighter squadrons. Much more heavily armed than the Escort Carrier, the Interceptor seemed to be a sure thing to become the Empire's mainline Escort Carrier.

However, the Empire chose otherwise, and went with the KDY Escort Carrier instead. The Imperial masterminds did not see the need to produce another craft which was basically the same thing as an Imperial Star Destroyer, and moreover did not see the necessity to design an Escort Carrier that could enter the fray and receive glory in that function. Therefore, only a few Interceptors are in use in the outlying region in units comprised of Interdictors and Enforcers, and have a dozen were sold to the CSA.
