The SR-71 D-Wing
was designed by FreiTek's Shadow Work division to be capable of
penetrating heavily defended targets, conduct a recon or a limited
strike, and still be able to get away intact.
In order to achieve
the mission profile, Shadow Works had to emphasize speed at the
expense of other performance aspects such as maneuverability and
stealth. The final result was a vessel capable of cruising at speeds
that normal starfighters could only dream about. In fact, the D-Wing
is the fastest sublight ship in Known Space. A relatively small,
broad-bodied craft, the D-Wing is larger than many combat shuttles,
but most of this space is engine. Capable of speeds equaling twice
those of the TIE/ln, the D-Wing produces a truly spectacular light
show when she goes to full thrust.
Lightly armed with
a pair of ion cannons and an aft-firing concussion missile launcher,
the D-wing is not intended for the traditional dogfighting missions.
These weapons were selected to lessen her energy signature while
drifting, and to provide a small degree of protection. Her four
internal weapons bays are able to carry a half ton of ordnance each,
with another two tons carried on a center-line pylon, making her
a potent strike ship against specially selected targets. However,
they are very difficult and expensive to build and requires a tremendous
amount of maintenance. As a result the D-wing is almost never issued
to sector commands. Rather, they are pooled at the regional commands,
High Command and the Main Fleet as a special mission asset.
The D-Wing (Delta
Wing) is also known by the nickname "Blackbird" due to its dark-blue
color.
The number built
is still classified but it is generally believed that there were
three batches, totalling 31 crafts. Of these, three were built as
trainers while the rest are optimized for strategic recon. All D-Wings
produced are used by the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, but
the unit is normally split into several small detachments composed
of 2 to 4 D-Wings, which are detached to temporary bases for the
duration of their mission.
