The second variation that followed the TIE/x1 was the TIE Advanced x2, which featured slightly improved systems, a more powerful navigational computer, a repulsorlift generator and a set of field landing skids. There were fewer of the TIE/ad2's made, but they were a more popular craft with pilots, who no longer needed to return to specially equipped ships or garrisons to land. These can be disinguished by the cut-outs made in the leading edge of the solar panels, forming the "daggers" that would become famous on the Interceptor. Finally, there was a production run of the TIE Bomber Advanced , which was intended primarily to support Advanced-equipped wings and for secretive missions.

Even many years after the introduction of the TIE Interceptor , the TIE/ad series remained popular personal craft for wing leaders and the few fleet commanders who had worked thier way up the ranks in the Imperial Navy's Fighter Corps. Many sectors had a squadron or two of these ships, usually commanded directly by the Moff's office as a special unit.

The third variation is a TIE Advanced x3, but this is considered to be the prototype of the TIE Interceptor, as it used the body of the Interceptor, but it mounted the TIE/ln's weapons in a chin mount.
